In 1937, a German chemist called Friedrich Bayer studied the chemistry of polyurethane and as a result, he started to develop a programme during world war ll to replace rubber with elastic polyurethane this was mainly due to Germany being at war with most of their suppliers in World War II. In 1940, the first polyurethane elastomers were produced. These compounds gave a millable gum which could be used as an adequate alternative to rubber.
In 1950, Otto Bayer first introduced Vulkollan polyurethane which gave a higher mechanical strength and dynamic load-bearing capacity making it the number one polyurethane elastomer material to be used in the manufacture of castor wheels.
Such industries as the forklift market were the tyres are up against extreme pressures and loads continuously vulkollan can handle all these extreme conditions, these type wheels are also heavily used in the roller coaster industry where conditions are different from one country to another with high temperatures and humidity to colder climates also they can run longer whilst standing up to the g forces exerted around the sweeping curves.
